Alamo Plaza's Old Rite Aid Is Becoming a Gym. Your Prescriptions Already Moved.

What is going into the former Rite Aid at Alamo Plaza? Late this summer a reader sent that question to Bay Area Telegraph. She had heard it would be a Fitness 19, then that it would be something else, and the outlet found that both rumors were partly right.

Vim + Vigor Fitness's first "Reserve Club" is taking over the 17,640-square-foot space at 130 Alamo Plaza, with a target opening of December 2026. A drugstore anchor is coming back as a gym, not another store. Combined with where Rite Aid's prescriptions went, that shows what Alamo Plaza has turned into. Safeway still covers groceries. Next door, more and more of the center serves workouts and other weekly habits, and the pharmacy run now ends up on Danville Boulevard.

The Errand That Left First

Rite Aid's exit happened in two stages. Pharmacy services at the Alamo store stopped on July 28, 2025, and prescriptions were transferred to CVS at 3158 Danville Blvd. The store's last day was planned for Aug. 24, 2025, as part of the chain's bankruptcy closures.

So the pharmacy errand moved more than a year before anyone knew what the empty building would become, and it isn't coming back. When DanvilleSanRamon.com described downtown Alamo in its October 2025 "Change afoot for Alamo" feature, it listed the basics as Safeway, the post office, and "one remaining pharmacy in the form of CVS."

According to CVS's store listing, the Danville Boulevard pharmacy keeps these hours:

  • Monday through Friday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Daily lunch closure: 1:30 to 2 p.m.

The 1:30 lunch closure is easy to forget if you were used to a pharmacy counter at the plaza.

What Took Its Place, and Why the Name Is Confusing

The signs will say Vim + Vigor Fitness Reserve. The Fitness 19 rumor makes sense, though. Bay Area Telegraph reported that ENDO Fitness runs gyms under both names, and that several Bay Area Fitness 19 clubs, including ones in Concord, Pleasanton, Campbell and San Jose, have already been converted to Vim + Vigor. The operator is now focusing its growth on the Vim + Vigor brand.

Alamo isn't getting an ordinary Vim + Vigor, either. This is the company's first Reserve Club, which its Alamo location page describes as "our most elevated fitness experience, designed for those who expect more from where they train." According to Bay Area Telegraph, the plans include strength and cardio equipment from Panatta Sport, Arsenal Strength, Torque Fitness, Life Fitness, Matrix, Hammer Strength and American Barbell. The club is also advertising a Himalayan salt sauna, red-light therapy, compression boots, massage chairs and personal training.

The feature most likely to change daily routines is access. Bay Area Telegraph reported that members will get 24-hour access, which would set the club apart from many nearby gyms with shorter hours. The hours field on the club's Alamo page is still blank, so the posted schedule at opening will settle the question.

The Founding Rate Has Already Moved

The pricing has already changed. In late August, Bay Area Telegraph reported a founding rate of $65 a month for the first 400 members, rising to a regular $109 a month. The club's own page now advertises founding rates for "the next 300 members only." It shows $85 next to the original $65 and says rates go up to the standard $109 once "our second round of Founding Memberships is claimed."

Membership tier Monthly rate Cap
First founding round, as reported Aug. 31 $65 First 400 members
Second founding round, per the club's page $85 Next 300 members
Standard rate $109 None listed

The page's wording suggests the first tier has been claimed, even though the club hasn't opened yet. The pre-enrollment office is set to open Monday, Nov. 2. The club's page lists the date but not a separate office address or hours.

A Plaza That Was Already Leaning This Way

A fitness club in this spot continues what the plaza was already doing. The Reserve Club will join two fitness tenants already in the center, along with a gym that operated there for years before the pandemic.

Business Address What it is
Vim + Vigor Fitness Reserve Club 130 Alamo Plaza Full-size gym, opening target December 2026
The Iron House 190F Alamo Plaza Fitness tenant
BODYROK 170F Alamo Plaza Pilates studio

As DanvilleSanRamon.com noted, 24 Hour Fitness was a longtime tenant at the plaza until it closed for good in 2020 during the pandemic. That paper's 2025 downtown feature also described salons, medspas, fitness studios and doctors' offices as being found "throughout the plaza and the surrounding shopping centers."

The size of the new club stands out. EDENS, which bought Alamo Plaza in 2022, lists BODYROK at 2,035 square feet and the Bank of America branch at 9,644 square feet. At 17,640 square feet, the Reserve Club is more than eight times the size of the Pilates studio and close to twice the size of the bank. EDENS describes the whole center as more than 200,000 square feet, anchored by Safeway. One lease has put a large share of that space into fitness.

It also closes the biggest gap. Bay Area Telegraph wrote that Rite Aid's departure left Safeway as the plaza's only traditional anchor and created one of the most visible retail vacancies in the community. In the 2025 feature, Becky Wynn, co-owner of EJ Phair Alehouse and Pub, and Supervisor Candace Andersen both pointed to more vacancies at the center, with the shuttered Rite Aid among them. If the December target holds, the space will be back in use about 16 months after Rite Aid's last day. EDENS's current directory lists space 480, at 1,187 square feet, as available.

The Storefront Next Door Is Its Own Story

Part of the confusion this summer came from the building next door. The gym is going into the former Rite Aid itself. It is not taking the neighboring 140A Alamo Plaza storefront, which Bay Area Telegraph says once housed Alamo Express by 24 Hour Fitness and has recently been used seasonally by Adopt-A-Family Bikes.

Adopt-A-Family Bikes is back there for 2026. Its site gives the location as 140A Alamo Plaza, next door to Round Table Pizza, open Sunday and Monday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The program started in 2002 at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Danville, when parishioners saw that bikes kept showing up on Adopt A Family wish lists from Monument Crisis Center clients. It still operates under St. Timothy's 501(c)(3), and it has since outgrown the church's space. Volunteers clean, repair and safety-check donated bikes, which go to local nonprofits including Contra Costa Interfaith Housing in Concord.

Its Sunday hours overlap with the weekly farmers market, which EDENS lists at 200 Alamo Plaza every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the lot near Bank of America. You can pick up produce and stop by the bike workshop in the same visit.

What the Calendar Looks Like From Here

  • Monday, Nov. 2: The Vim + Vigor pre-enrollment office is scheduled to open.
  • December 2026: The Reserve Club's target opening. The company hasn't announced a specific date, so treat this as a goal rather than a firm day.
  • Every Sunday: The farmers market runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Adopt-A-Family Bikes is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 140A, also open Mondays.
